★ 5City Diner was such a fantastic breakfast stop during our time in Kansas City. If you’re looking for that authentic, no-frills local diner experience with great food and warm service, this is it.
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere had that classic morning buzz — regulars chatting, coffee refills flowing, and that comforting smell of breakfast on the grill. It has a genuine local vibe that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a proper American diner scene.
The waitress was incredibly attentive and friendly. She checked in regularly without being intrusive, kept our coffee topped up, and made us feel very welcome. Service was efficient, warm, and personable — the kind that really elevates a simple breakfast into a memorable experience.
Now the food — absolutely amazing. The fried chicken steak was a standout. Crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside, and paired perfectly with rich, comforting gravy. It’s hearty, satisfying, and exactly what you want from a classic diner breakfast. The sausage patty was equally impressive — juicy, well-seasoned, and packed with flavor. You can tell they don’t cut corners on quality.
Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and everything feels freshly prepared. It’s the kind of place where you leave full and happy, already thinking about what you’d order next time.
Highly recommend City Diner if you want a solid, delicious breakfast with great service and a true local morning vibe in Kansas City. Would definitely come back again. -

★ 5We’ve been wanting to come here since we moved to Kansas City three years ago. Today was the day. We had a little staycation downtown and skipped the hotel breakfast to come here. The City Diner is outstanding! They definitely have their locals and regular customers, but we’re also welcoming to us as first timers.
Our waitress was jovial and courteous, and answered all of our silly questions.
My wife had a half order of biscuits and gravy.
I had a double cheeseburger, which was enormous. Those patties are no joke. I would get a single next time. Thankfully, it did not come with fries or tots as that would’ve been entirely too much food. I could hardly finish it, and I was ravenous.
We want to come back and try other things here. It will not take a long time before we return. My wife loved her biscuits and gravy, and she is from the south. The biscuits were pillowy, soft and flaky.
We have found our divvy diner that we love. The City Diner opened in 1937. One taste of their food and you’ll know why they’ve been around almost 90 years. -

★ 5The 12-inch pancake was quite an undertaking. I could not finish the whole thing. I honestly would have liked it a little more cooked, but that's just a personal preference. My husband really liked his country fried steak and eggs with gravy. It was also a huge portion. It is your classic breakfast diner you find in any city: reasonable prices, friendly staff, and plenty of food. I will definitely be back.

★ 5City Diner is a real diner right near River Market and absolutely worth a trip.
We were there for breakfast and the pancakes and French toast were both recommended. We didn't try the French toast but the pancakes were delicious, fluffy with a nice crispy rim. We had bacon and a sweet roll too and they were great as well.
The decor was set up for Halloween with fun decorations and signs all around. And the fast, friendly, knowledgeable staff were dressed for the season as well.
Yeah, reasonable price, good food, great service, and fun atmosphere makes City Diner an easy recommendation.
