It's very nice to travel and stay in authentic, historical establishments and receive such wonderful service, food and lodging. I think it was two Septembers ago when we passed through. I saw something about tonight about Waterbury and remembered our lovely stay an Middleton. That I had not written my appreciation. I had researched the place and found it to deliver. Would love to stay there again. We departed the next morning for Ticonderoga and took with us some photographs and warm memories. Bravo! Ten out of Ten. We will see you all again, LORD willin..

The hostess seems a little stressed and had a big to do based around whether or not people had made reservations before showing up. Saw a guy walk out on her because he didn't want to deal with her parade. Experienced hostesses would know before a guest showed what the availability is, the place had many empty tables. Outside of that the food was awesome. The poached eggs on the Benedict were a little over cooked, but it still tasted good. My $16 dollar slices of toast were very very small and my daughters pancakes were large enough to feed two people. Over $70 on breakfast for 3, I'd expect a bit more out of the place. The waitress was nice but wasn't on top of our table like I'd expect. Overall I was sitting in a spot where the air conditioner was blowing right on me and I had to wear my jacket all through breakfast. The food tasted good enough for us to want visit again, hopefully this visit was just a spoof and the next one will be better.

My husband ordered the steak au poivre with pommes pureé, asparagus & pepper sauce & I ordered the shepherds pie. The steak was mostly gristle, no ‘pommes’ (potatoes) & a gravy that was just oil, flour & milk - no seasoning. His entire meal was tasteless & full of gristle. My shepherds pie was utterly tasteless, albeit a lovely presentation. No gravy, just a wimpy wine/broth ‘sauce’. How can you render beef, delicious veggies & mashed potatoes into such an uninspired dish?! Our server,Sue, was wonderful & the wine was tasty. While we love the Middlebury Inn, we won’t eat at the Tavern again.

We called and made a reservation and asked for a quiet table which was promised but when we arrived, they didn't have our reservation. The waitstaff was indifferent to all of us, answered questions, but not very friendly, the food was just okay, but disappointing from the outstanding meal I had in April 2026.

Lovely brunch. Highly recommend the chicken and waffles! The Italian breakfast bowl was mighty tasty. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Check out the old elevator too
