★ 5A True Hidden Gem – The Brookside Inn in Smyrna, MainennWhat a delightful little place! The locals know it well, and visitors to northern Maine should absolutely make a point of stopping at The Brookside Inn. It’s conveniently located just off I-95 in Smyrna, about ten miles south of Houlton — the perfect stop for a hearty, home-cooked meal.
If you can, go on a Tuesday — it’s Customer Appreciation Day, and every diner gets a free slice of sheet cake with their meal. If you’re too full, they’ll happily wrap it up to go!
I started with a “cup” of corn chowder, which was more like a small bowl — no complaints there. The flavor was excellent and comforting, though a bit thinner than a typical chowder. Still, it was delicious and satisfying.
For my entrée, I chose the open-faced turkey sandwich on homemade bread with mashed potatoes and squash. The turkey was moist, the gravy flavorful, and the squash was outstanding — fresh, buttery, and perfectly seasoned. True northern Maine comfort food.
I took my chocolate sheet cake to go (it was every bit as good as I hoped!) and couldn’t resist adding a homemade whoopie pie from the baker’s tray — absolutely worth it.
The best part? The prices are very reasonable for such generous portions, and the staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming.
If you’re traveling through the area, do yourself a favor and stop at The Brookside Inn — it’s one of those small-town gems that reminds you why Maine hospitality and home cooking are second to none. -

★ 2Stopped for dinner there this week and had Monterey chicken. It came with no BBQ sauce on it and was pretty tiny looking on that big plate! By the time I figured out what was missing, it was gone. Another one of us had a chicken sandwich.....again, small piece of chicken that didn't cover the bun and no lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. Chicken overcooked and tough. Free cake today though and that was delicious!

★ 5Beautiful CLEAN very nice I did get a Cordon bleu which was described as “chicken burger” which I thought was GROUND CHICKEN!! It was not it was regular chicken for chicken sandwich . Had ham and Swiss . I can not eat “whole chicken “ so I lost out!! But it looked good! But for most part this place is nice! And they have a cute gift shop!

★ 4I haven't stayed at the hotel, but have visited many times for the restaurant. The service is always good and the employees are friendly. I highly recommend the turkey dinner, it's delicious! Good local spot for breakfast and conveniently located right off the highway. The gift shop is super cute packed with a variety of items and locally made products.
