Matthews Cafeteria is a lunch spot that has stood the test of time. It’s a classic cafeteria experience, with a similar ordering style to what you would find at a school cafeteria but offering a wide assortment of Southern food.

Lots of parking and lots of seating here, you shouldn’t have trouble finding space for a big group here. The space definitely gives a historic vibe, it feels like things haven’t changed here for 50 years and that’s a good thing in this case, If it works, it works.

The ordering experience was a bit stressful for my wife and I. None of the food is labelled, you’re in a line of people all trying to get food, and the workers didn’t really seem to care much to answer our questions about what is what. Really feels like this spot caters to locals and regulars, which is fine but if you’re neither of those you may find the ordering experience a bit stressful.

Now for the food - we got a pretty big spread because we were hungry and it cost us $40 total. Standouts were the beef stew, rice and peas, and the sweet potato casserole. These really felt like home cooked goodness that had a lot of love in them and the sweet potato casserole may have been one of the best I’ve ever had. Rich, sweet, and roasty - it tasted like home. The corn bread made me sad, it was so dry and the cold butter couldn’t save it. The fried chicken was ok but not juicy enough for me and the breading wasn’t all that crunchy or crispy. The mashed potatoes, corn pudding, and strawberry cake we ok but forgettable.

This place is an institution and I think worth a visit. It was very cool to experience the vibes here but the hit to miss ratio on the food means I probably won’t be coming back for a second visit anytime soon.

🍋 Lemonade not sweet enough but I still enjoyed it. Potato 🥔 salad was real good. 🐔 Chicken tenders needed more seasoning but I still liked it. I couldn't pin point what was in the 🍚 brown rice. Mash potato 🥔 and gravy was ok. I like the sticks of green onion. The cranberry sauce was nicely sweet 😋

Had a great time here! Everything was delicious and the portions were really generous. Definitely with recommend the Mac and cheese, Salisbury steak, and turnip greens!! The lemon meringue pie was delicious as well. I’ll be back to try the strawberry shortcake for sure.

There is a reason why the have been in business 70+ years!

Visited for my first time tonight and the food was really good. The staff was friendly and kind. A great experience!
Loved the fried chicken, and the peach cobbler, and the stuffing!

The sweet tea was spot-on! Perfect! Not too sweet, just the right amount!

Definitely coming back with the family.

So this is my second time eating here. Wow what a difference. First experience, food was very good. The fried chicken was good.
But this time I got the country fried steak. 9.25 for one piece. Which I don’t care about the price if it’s good. Although it looked pretty good, it was not good to me. It was putting cubed steak in a pan and covering it with boxed stove top stuffing and a few onions and putting in the oven. It was very bland, no flavor, mushy in texture and chewy. Almost couldn’t eat it. But I did because I hadn’t eaten all day.n$19.98 for meat, 2 sides and a tea.. Not the quality for the cost.
